Reviews of classic African recordings

Teningnini Demba

Teningnini Demba is the grand-daughter of Ba Zoumana Sissoko. Her second cassette (above) was released in 1994. The opening track "Yirbayo" was one of the top Malian songs of the 1990s. An inspired recording with a scorching guitar solo (one of Mali's best) it is quintessential listening. The backing vocalists are also superb, as are the lead vocals of Teni Demba. She has an excellent band and further recordings are hopefully forthcoming.
